Plan the Perfect Wine Getaway in the Algarve

Sunshine, ocean breezes, and a glass of perfectly chilled wine - that’s how holidays should begin. The Algarve may be best known for its beaches, but for wine lovers, it’s a gem. This southernmost region of Portugal is home to four official wine-growing areas (DOCs): Lagos, Portimão, Lagoa, and Tavira, all offering unforgettable tasting experiences, vineyard tours, and lunches under olive trees.

At Resort Rentals Algarve, we help guests experience the Algarve like locals, and that includes sipping your way through its scenic wine country. Here's your perfect 7-day wine-themed holiday, starting from your holiday home in Lagos.

Day 1: Arrive in Lagos & Sip Like a Local

Welcome to the Lagos DOC (Denominação de Origem Controlada), one of the Algarve’s official wine regions. After settling into your holiday rental, start your trip with a bottle of Arinto or Antão Vaz, crisp white wines grown just a short drive away. You’ll find plenty of wine bars and restaurants in Lagos’s old town offering regional pairings. Try Restaurante dos Artistas or Ol’ Bastard’s Wine Bar for a modern twist on local favorites.

Day 2: Wine Tasting in Lagoa

Just 30 minutes from Lagos, the Lagoa DOC is a must-visit for wine lovers. Historically known for sweet fortified wines, it’s now a hub for excellent rosés and full-bodied reds.

Top winery stops:

- Quinta dos Vales (Estômbar): Famous for its “Wine & Art” estate, you can book tastings, workshops, or even blend your own bottle.

- Quinta da Penina: A boutique producer offering intimate tasting sessions in a traditional setting.

- Arvad Winery (Portimão): Set on the banks of the Arade River, Arvad offers a laid-back vibe perfect for lingering over a glass. Don’t miss their Sunset Sessions every Thursday from 6–9 PM - live music, golden light, and fantastic wines make it unforgettable.

Travel tip: Book winery tours in advance during summer (they fill up quickly).

Day 3: History & Wine in Silves

Step back in time with a day in Silves, the former Moorish capital of the Algarve. Visit the imposing castle and the gothic cathedral before heading to:

- Cabrita Wines: A family-run estate producing elegant whites and rosés. Tastings offer a personal, relaxed experience.

- Morgado do Quintão: Known for its organic wines and unforgettable vineyard lunches beneath 2,000-year-old olive trees.

Silves offers the perfect blend of history, authenticity, and world-class wine.

Day 4: Discover Tavira & Eastern Algarve Wines

Venture east to Tavira DOC, where the wine scene is less touristy and more rustic.

- Tavira Al‑Lagar: A restored wine press turned tasting room featuring wines from Casa Santos Lima.

- Explore nearby São Brás de Alportel or Loulé, which are producing exciting new reds and whites from native varieties like Negra Mole and Crato Branco.

- Enjoy fresh seafood in Tavira town afterward.

Day 5: Beach Day with a Rosé Picnic

Time to relax. Pack a picnic and head to Praia do Camilo or Praia da Marinha - two of the Algarve’s most popular beaches. A chilled bottle of Lagoa rosé pairs perfectly with local cheese, olives and cured meats.

Our rentals include wine glasses and essentials - just ask!

Day 6: Vineyard Lunch Near Albufeira

Treat yourself to a slow lunch surrounded by vines.

- Morgado do Quintão: Their Join Our Table experience includes wine, local dishes, and live music in a relaxed vineyard setting.

- Adega do Cantor: Founded by Cliff Richard, this estate near Albufeira produces the famous Vida Nova wines. Tastings are fun, informative, and affordable.

It’s the perfect way to round out your wine journey.

Day 7: Final Toast in Lagos

Spend your last day enjoying Lagos. Visit the Mercado Municipal to pick up local products and stop by a boutique wine shop to take home a few bottles of Algarve sunshine. Look for labels from the Lagos DOC - elegant whites and reds made with pride just a few kilometers from your door.

Local Wine Travel Tips

- Best time to visit: Spring and early autumn offer perfect weather and fewer crowds.

- Transport: Renting a car is the easiest way to reach inland vineyards.

- Tours: Book winery visits in advance, especially for lunch experiences.

- Stay hydrated: Tastings can be generous, bring water and snacks for the ride!
