Driving in the Algarve gives you access to places you simply can’t reach otherwise, but there are a few things tourists consistently get wrong.
Here’s what you need to know before renting a car in Lagos or anywhere in the Algarve.
Do You Actually Need a Car?
You DON’T need a car if:
- You’re staying in Lagos town
- You plan to walk, Uber, or do local activities
You DO need a car if:
- You want to explore Sagres, hidden beaches, or inland
- You’re staying outside central Lagos
Most travellers overestimate how much they need a car.
Toll Roads (This Catches Tourists Out)
Portugal uses electronic toll roads on some major highways (recently removed from the A22).
- No physical toll booths in many areas
- Charges linked to your rental car
What to do:
- Ask for a toll transponder from your rental company
- Or register your card to the vehicle
Cost: Typically €5–€10 depending on distance
Parking in Lagos
- Old Town: very limited
- Paid parking zones (blue lines)
- Free parking outside centre
Tip: Stay somewhere with:
- Included parking
- Or walking access to town
Driving Rules Tourists Miss
- Drive on the right-hand side
- Speed limits strictly enforced
- Roundabouts: priority to traffic already on the roundabout
- No phone use while driving
Fines are issued on the spot in many cases.
Fuel Costs
- Petrol: ~€1.70–€1.90/L
- Diesel slightly cheaper
Budget: €10–€20/day depending on usage
Road Conditions
- Roads are generally excellent
- Coastal routes are scenic but narrow in places
- Rural roads can be less maintained
Common Tourist Mistakes
- Not understanding toll systems
- Booking oversized cars for narrow streets
- Assuming parking is easy in Lagos centre
- Renting a car unnecessarily
When Driving Actually Makes Sense
- Exploring west coast (Sagres, Arrifana)
- Visiting multiple beaches in one day
- Staying in villas outside town
If you’re planning to rely less on driving, choosing Algarve accommodation in the right location becomes critical.
Staying in or near Lagos town allows you to:
- Avoid parking stress
- Reduce transport costs
- Walk to beaches, restaurants, and marina
